Some facts about St Vladimir's Seminary


  • In any given year, there are between 75 and 95 students enrolled at the seminary. Students represent a variety of different Orthodox churches and come from countries around the globe.
  • St Vladimir's is one of the few Orthodox theological schools in the country that provides dormitory facilities for single men and single women, and apartments for married students and their families. Seventeen apartments are now available on campus with plans for five more to be built within the next five years.
  • By intention, most faculty members reside on campus, thus building community life and offering accessibility.
  • To date, more than 30 Orthodox bishops and 700 priests and deacons have graduated from the school.
  • The seminary's recent capital campaign brought over $22 million to the Seminary.
  • Three Orthodox patriarchs -- Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholemew I, Patriarch Alexy of Moscow and All Russia, and Patriarch Ignatius IV of Antioch and All the East -- were members of the advisory board of the campaign.
  • Five current Orthodox patriarchs have received honorary degrees from St Vladimir's.
 
  • The tuition at the school is one of the lowest among graduate schools of theology. The cost for an unmarried student is $11,400 for the full academic year 2003, including tuition, room, and board.
  • St Vladimir's Seminary newly-built library currently has more than 121,000 volumes, and is able to hold over 230,000 volumes.
  • The library stack space was originally built in 1963 for a maximum of 30,000 volumes.
  • An original manuscript of Rachmaninoff's Vespers was located in the seminary's uncatalogued library collection.
  • The oldest book in the library was published in 1583 -- the Ostrog Bible -- the first book printed in the cyrillic alphabet.
  • The three professional librarians at SVS have between them a total of over 90 years professional library experience.
  • SVS Press is the largest distributor of English language materials in the Orthodox Church. So far, it has published 238 print titles, with 14 new titles scheduled for academic year 2002-2003. Approximately 90,000 SVS Press volumes are sold each year.
  • SVS Press is in the process of publishing the collected works of Bishop Kallistos (Ware), one of the most prominent Orthodox theologians in the world today. The volume I, The Inner Kingdom, is now available, with volume II, In the Image of the Trinity, expected soon.
  • SVS has received a $300,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment to enhance the teaching and learning of theology in its MDiv program, and to train faculty and staff in the use of computers, networks, and a variety of information technologies. Part of the grant provides for cooperation with Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Seminary in Brookline, MA, in the use of technology to further theological education.
  • SVS has received a grant of $225,000 from the Henry Luce Foundation in New York for the development of our liturgical music program.
  • Upon her death in September 2000, gifts from Nina Gramowich's estate have established the Peter N. Gramowich Chair in Church History and the Peter N. Gramowich Endowment for Lay Education at St Vladimir's Seminary. These endowments totalled $2 million.
  • The annual operation budget for fiscal year 2002 is $2,600,000.
  • During fiscal year 2002, a total of $220,550 was awarded to 41 students from scholarship funds administered by the Seminary.
 
  • At present, SVS has 10 full-time and 7 part-time faculty members, and employs 23 full-time and 3 part-time staff members.
