St Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary invites all to join us for the 2005 Annual Florovksy Memorial Lecture. This year's lecturer, Prof. Vigen Guroian, will give a talk entitled "I Confess the Cross Because I Know of the Resurrection." The lecture will be held on the seminary's campus Friday, June 10, 2005, at 7:30 p.m. in the Metropolitan Philip Auditorium.
Prof. Guroian is professor of theology and ethics at Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland. He was assistant professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia from 1978-81 and held a post there as well in the Center for Russian and East European Studies. He has also been a visiting lecturer at St Nersess Armenian Seminary in New Rochelle, New York. Since 1986 Dr Guroian has been a member of the faculty of the Ecumenical Institute of Theology at St Mary’s Seminary and University, teaching courses there regularly. For the academic year 1995-1996 he was named the Distinguished Lecturer in Moral and Religious Education at the Institute. In addition to his teaching career he has served on many advisory and editorial boards and filled a variety of leadership roles in the areas of ecumenism, cultural renewal, prison ministry, and bioethical work.
He has authored more than one hundred and fifty articles in books, journals, and encyclopedias on a range of subjects. Among his published works are eight books: Rallying the Really Human Things: The Moral Imagination in Politics, Literature, and Everyday Life; Incarnate Love: Essays in Orthodox Ethics; Ethics After Christendom: Toward an Ecclesial Ethic; Inheriting Paradise: Meditations on Gardening; and Tending the Heart of Virtue: How Classic Stories Awaken a Child's Moral.
The Florovsky Memorial Lecture, held in different locations each year, honors Fr Georges Florovsky, eminent Orthodox theologian, historian, and Slavic scholar who was the dean of St Vladimir's Seminary from 1949-1955. Past Florovsky Lecturers have included His Grace, Bishop Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia, Dr Peter Brown, and Dr Jaroslav Pelikan. This public event takes place during the private meeting of the Orthodox Theological Society of America, which will gather at St Vladimir's Seminary from June 9-11, but the Friday evening lecture is free and open to the public.
