St Vladimir's Seminary Press Exhibits at AAR/SBL CRESTWOOD, NY—St Vladimir's Seminary Press did a brisk business at the American Academy of Religion and the Society for Biblical Literature meeting held from November 21 through November 25, 2003 in Atlanta, Georgia. Always held just prior to the American Thanksgiving holiday, this four-day annual meeting is among the largest and most important gatherings of religious studies professors, biblical scholars, theological librarians, booksellers, and publishers from across North America, the United Kingdom, and Western Europe. Not only do attendees buy books for their personal libraries, but they also review the vast array of publisher's offerings for possible course texts. Participants from the seminary this year were Fr John Behr, associate professor of patristics, Julia Wickes, communications officer, and Fr Stephen J. Hrycyniak, director of marketing for SVS Press. As editor of the Popular Patristics series and author of The Way to Nicaea, Fr Behr was an invaluable resource and font of information in the booth as he discussed the theological content of SVS Press publications with colleagues and made editorial contacts for future acquisitions. Ms Wickes was able to make several media contacts, as well as participate in a public relations seminar hosted by Publishers Weekly. In addition to staffing the booth and attending sessions of the Eastern Orthodox study group, Fr Behr lectured at a St Vladimir's Seminary alumni event at St Mary of Egypt Church in Norcross, Georgia, hosted by alumnus Fr Peter Smith. Fr Hrycyniak conducted sales conferences with the Australian and Canadian distributors of SVS Press and participated in a publishers presentation hosted by the Association of Theological Booksellers. Fr Hrycyniak and Ms Wickes also had an opportunity to visit St Elias Church, the rector of which is alumnus Archimandrite Michael Evans, to peruse their parish library for use as a standard for the development of the forthcoming St Vladimir's Seminary parish library project. |
