FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 23, 2003

Dean of St Sergius Theological Institute to speak at SVS Commencement Ceremonies
will receive honorary doctorate

On May 17, 2003, His Beatitude, Metropolitan HERMAN, primate of the Orthodox Church in America and President of St Vladimir's Seminary, will preside over the commencement exercises of the class of 2003, and confer the degree of Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, on Fr Boris Bobrinskoy, renowned Orthodox theologian and Dean of St Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris.

Fr Boris will be the keynote speaker at the commencement ceremony. St Vladimir's Seminary is particularly glad to reaffirm its longstanding ties with the historic St Sergius Institute, which was founded in Paris in 1925. Several of the seminary's faculty, such as Fr Alexander Schmemann, Fr John Meyendorff, and Fr Georges Florovsky, were closely associated with St Sergius before their arrival in the US.

St Vladimir's Seminary has hosted Fr Bobrinskoy on numerous occasions in the past, and its Press published his major work The Mystery of the Trinity in 1999. His most recent book, The Compassion of the Father, is due for release in July 2003.

The day of the seminary commencement exercises will begin with a hierarchical Divine Liturgy presided by the Metropolitan, at 9 A.M.. A luncheon for the seminary's Board of Trustees will follow. At 2:30, the trustees, faculty, staff, and students of the seminary (with their families) will gather in the Three Hierarchs Chapel for a thanksgiving service, followed by a procession to the Metropolitan Philip Saliba Auditorium for the conferral of degrees. Great Vespers will conclude the day at 5 P.M..

On Sunday May 18, the seminary faculty will enjoy a seminar given by Fr Boris, and a dinner in his honor.
