The seminary library staff is overjoyed with the possibilities for improved
service that the new library offers to an expanding clientele.
In practical terms, the new library provides:
- more than 50 study areas for students compared to just 14 in the old
library.
- a variety of seating arrangements - quiet study rooms, study carrels,
tables, and countertops. These offer possibilities for a variety of
activities to take place simultaneously without disturbance or confusion.
- state-of-the-art compact shelving to allow the growth of library holdings
to reach 230,000 volumes.
- ample space for the library staff to receive, sort, and catalog new
books and old collections the seminary receives annually. Lifting heavy
boxes is now a thing of the past. There is now space for maneuvering
library book trucks and even an elevator!
- proper circulation and reference desks.
- proper lighting throughout the building and, in particular, at study
carrels.
- an integrated humidity, ventilation, and air conditioning system.
- proper office space for the library staff.
- a special area for the seminarys rare book collection dating
back to the 1500s.
- High-speed fiber optic link to the seminary network and the T1 connection
to the Internet.
- improved service to a worldwide patronage that is increasingly web-savvy.
As a significant part of the Orthodox mission in the world at large,
the new library indeed is the impetus for a better-organized, broad-based
Orthodox Christian library collection.
