Specialist Work for Church Bodies

The following items are entered here, rather than as "community service," because they represent very serious creative tasks to which I was appointed because of my professional expertise; the analogy would be a scientist reporting commissioned applied research work, and like the scientist, my experiences from this work further my professional competence and standing, and are reflected in my teaching and historical research. Also, the publications reported under this heading are serious research documents, equivalents of a white paper or a report for a government commission or the like.

Work in Progress

1998-9 teaching year at York U.

  1. Finish articles for publication from lectures about aspects of my research on Bourges Cathedral: the following articles emerge from the texts of the lectures given and refined in the past ten years.

By writing these articles up and submitting them to journals I hope to establish some "track record" for a major grant, to fund archeological high-technology, travel, and photocopying during my 2 years of sabbatical work to complete the monograph.

    • Salvation-history as Cosmic Order in the integrated iconographic programme of glass and sculpture at Bourges [appropriate for Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes]

    • St. William of Bourges in the iconography of Bourges Cathedral: flexibility, judgment, and original thinking in the execution and development of a programme [appropriate for Citeaux or Gesta]

    • The role of the workshop master and of stylistics in iconographic thinking and design: the Good Samaritan windows of Bourges, Chartres, and Sens [appropriate for Art Bulletin]

    • [with Bill Clark and Bob Greenberg] Inside the Decision-Making of a Medieval Master-Mason: contrastive solutions to the problem of rib-vaulting a hemicycle ambulatory at Bourges and Notre Dame of Paris [for Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians]

    • [if ... I can prove my breakthrough hypothesis!] Evidence for a direct role of William of Bourges in the programming of the earliest stained glass windows of the ambulatory at Bourges: the strange details of the windows of Peter/Paul and the Apocalypse [to publish in both English and French]

    • A short note: An enamel plaque from the chasse of St. William of Bourges? [in French in a Festschrift for J-Y. Ribault and in English in the Metropolitan Museum Bulletin]

    • [with Bill Clark and Grover Zinn and others] A collected volume of essays on new approaches to Abbot Suger's design mentality at St. Denis; this is the colloquium which we presented at the Medieval Academy]; this volume is under contract.

  2. Commence work on a multi-volume book treating both Critical Hermeneutics of Historical Methodology and a Critical Historiography of the Modern Historical Discipline, 1760-present [= History 3000 course turned into a detailed research work, and also into two practical student handbooks]

1999-2000 sabbatical for writing

  • major goal: complete a first draft of the historiography book just described
  • finish up any leftovers of the Bourges papers above
  • seeking major funding for the big Bourges monograph
  • commence planning for a book on method for medieval Iconology, with special emphasis on the difference between Eastern and Western Christian Iconology.

2000-2001 teaching at York U.

  • Commence a companion volume to Critical Historiography: Medieval Iconology as a Historical Discipline: a Critical and Methodological Introduction [also needed as basis for methodological introduction to the big Bourges monograph]
  • finish library-textual work and recensional research at Princeton Index of Christian Art for Bourges book

2001-2003 (sabbatical years)

  • Full 3-vol. book on An integrative history/art history study of Bourges Cathedral in the 13th Century.
  • completion of critical book on Iconology [above]

Possible post-retirement projects include publishing, as short monographs or articles, papers given at conferences during teaching years and continuing my professional work on behalf of the OCA and CCC, as well as pursuing the issue of Eastern vs. Western Iconology to some conclusion (possibly a book on what Icons and Church illumination are in Orthodoxy).
