St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary

2002 Lenten Retreat

Saturday, April 6, 2002 -- 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM

"Obedience and Freedom in Christian Life"
Fr. Thomas Hopko, Retreat Leader
Dean and Professor of Dogmatic Theology at St Vladimir's Seminary

Location;
St Vladimir's Seminary / Rangos Building Auditorium
575 Scarsdale Road, Crestwood, NY 10707

Fr Thomas Hopko, Dean of St Vladimir's Seminary, will describe how faith and love for God require unconditional obedience to God as exemplified and realized in God's Son Jesus who "humbled himself and became obedient (to the Father) unto death, even death on a cross" (Phil 2:8). He will show how the "law of Christ" (Gal 6:2) for human beings is indeed the "law of liberty" (James 1:25). He will relate obedience to God in Christ to godly obedience in church, family and society. He will bring evidence from the sciptures and saints to show that "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Cor 3:17). He will reflect on the character and qualities of "the glorious liberty of the children of God" (Rom 8:27).
