CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATORS

St Vladimir's Seminary Press (www.svspress.com) is looking for children's book illustrators for a number of projects.

1. The Saint of the Open Door
This book introduces Mother Maria Skobtsova, a newly canonized saint and an Orthodox Christian nun, who gave shelter to Jews in Paris during WWII. This true story centers on how she and her friends smuggled Jewish children out of a stadium. The Press is looking for an illustrator to render the story with sensitivity and light, yet with an eye for the gravity of the circumstances. A more realistic style is preferred (many of the scenes are quite detailed), but potential illustrators are nonetheless encouraged to be expressive and imaginative.

2. The Man and the Vine

This story is the first of two books (the second being The Woman and the Bread). The Man and the Vine follows the cycle of nature with a Eucharistic focus: God provides soil, sunshine, and rain; the man and his family tills the earth, plants grapevines, harvests grapes, and makes wine-which they then offer back to God as wine for Holy Communion. The Press is looking for an illustrator who can capture this process with lightheartedness, who is comfortable rendering the human figure, botanical forms, and a liturgical setting.

SVS Press is looking for art that captures life with artistic integrity and creativity, rather than the staid or "cheery" illustrations often considered to be religious children's art.

Illustrators are asked to e-mail links to online portfolios to the SVS Press Art Director, Amber Schley: amber@svots.edu. Portfolios in the form of CD or hard copy, along with a resume, may also be sent to Ms Schley at:
